Camel Infestation

Okay, they're "camel back crickets". I absolutely despise these things. And at night, when the lights go out... our basement is taken over by them. On a short walk to the washer & dryer (only about 8 steps), I probably walk past or into almost 20 of them, all different sizes. (Keep in mind this is only on a short walk to the washer & dryer... but they are EVERYWHERE.) They try to "scatter" which is a freakin' NIGHTMARE. They jump back & forth, all around, haphazardly, have NO idea what they're doing. The WORST was when one jumped onto my flip flop & my heel came down on it. I wanted to vomit.

The name, their description & their appearance all make me want to vomit. They are... chubby. I never thought I'd say I actually would prefer a black crunchy cricket, but I DO. The camelback crickets are brown & have a chubby torso. I could deal with that, except for the fact that they throw themselves at me as I try to walk in my basement. I found this description on my new favorite site bugspray.com :
Since it grows large, many people are
surprised at just how big they are.
Another unique feature of this cricket
is that they jump randomly and are more
likely to jump at you than away from you.
It is believed this is due to how they
see. Their vision is
such that it
appears to them they are moving away
from it's predator but in fact they are
moving towards it. Some people speculate
this has lead the species to appear to
be attacking which in turn chases away
would-be predators. Whatever the reason,
keep in mind they cannot bite or sting.
Even still, having a large unusual insect
jumping at you will probably feel
disconcerting.
What has me concerned is that my quick internet searches (how I treat ALL my problems - medical, broken AC, broken garage door, dying tree, you name it) seem to cater to "if you see one on occasion". Then I read the word "infestation" & I wanted to vomit. That's what we have. (gulp) A bigger problem. That requires either a gazillion sticky glue traps or calling the professionals. I've learned they are nocturnal & seem paralyzed when there is a light source. This is why we only see them at night... and why when we turn on the fluorescent lights its as if we've caught them with their pants down.

I have learned they eat fabric (much like moths) which is just one reason to get rid of them. Another being rats & mice like to feed on them. I think when I read that, was when I decided it was indeed something more than "something gross I had to endure in the basement at night".

Libby's laundry is done... but I think I'll just wait 'til the morning.

Grandma's Apple Trees

I'm still catching up ... this was from our last trip to St.Louis in August, right before the boys started school! My mom & dad have a couple apple trees in their back yard... they've had them there since I was little [& my mom told me Johnny Appleseed planted them... and I told everyone at school. My mom still stands by this claim...] So anyway, my kids can't help themselves... they just want to pick, pick, pick, shake the tree, hang from the limbs... they aren't exactly the most TASTY of apples, but they're edible.

So Grandma took them out back to help pick the apples. But part of the bargain was that they had to help cook them - & taste them. So they picked & gathered...

They scrubbed & rinsed while Grandma sliced...

They threw them in the skillet with a little margarine, sugar & cinnamon - but in the end, they got a unanimous...

Ten on Tuesday

1) A couple weeks ago we had our street's block party. It was a whole long afternoon of fun, beginning with a parade that started at our house. Kyle was the Grand Marshall since he was heading up the kids' activities. :) I love this picture of 2 daddies decorating their little girls' toys.

2) Brett (& Kyle) has joined Cub Scouts! He's a lil' Tiger Cub. A darn cute one, too.

3) Davis is enjoying being 4. :) And he's so good at it!

4) Libby still loves experimenting with fashion.

5) A new season of "The Office" starts on Thursday. YEE HAW

6) I never thought I'd be saying this... but I'm totally blowing off this season of "The Hills". I must be maturing... or I'm just too busy. One of the two.

7) I'm about to go make a batch of Oatmeal Cookies. I always split the dough in 2. I add chocolate chips to one 1/2 ... and cinnamon & raisins to the other 1/2. Yum. :P

8) On Friday we went to the park with some friends of ours - Mariah, Jack & Mia. If you don't know the whole story... it deserves its own post. But in a nutshell... Jack & Brett, Davis & Mia were in preschool together 2 years while we were all in Corpus Christi, TX. What are the chances that they moved to Kansas City 4 months before us? Pretty slim, I know... but it happened!
{Mia & Brett both got boo-boo's, but no one fell in!}

9) Our good, good friends the Lopez's came in town Saturday evening! They stayed a night with us & left the next afternoon for Tulsa to meet Val's new niece! We've been friends with the Lopez's since Kyle & I were newlyweds. Kyle & Joe were in flight school together! I think it's safe to say that we have laughed just as much in their company the past 8 years we've known them, as we have our whole lives. Joe & Val are the funniest people we know... and the 4 of us together is quite a scene. They come back on Thursday to stay for another night & we're looking forward to more time with them & their 2 adorable little girls Faye & Gwen.

10) Happy Fall Y'all! :) Here are some photos taken yesterday, 1st day of Autumn. I am sooooooooo excited. Remind me of that when our entire weekends are spent raking...

Flashback Friday - The Cowboy Outfit

When Brett was born (almost 7 years ago, sniff sniff!) Kyle's mom gave me a bunch of Kyle's old clothes. I especially liked the ones that Kyle had been photographed in! The cowboy outfit was my favorite! When Brett & Davis were both about 1 year of age, I put them in the cowboy & did a little photo shoot. So here are all 3 of my boys... from left to right, Brett (2002), Kyle (1977) & Davis (2005). I have all 3 of these in a frame together (turned black & white) with their names & dates. It looks so cute! So our family sort of has a little cowboy, cowgirl theme going on, despite the fact that we're Kansas City & St.Louis City Slickers. Okay, technically Libby is a born Texan so she can probably pull off the look! And maybe some of us are more Suburbanites than we are City Slickers. But whatever. As my family always says, don't let the facts get in the way of a good story. :) [if you missed the Cowgirl Flashback Friday, click here]

If my Camera could talk, Part I

Brett & Davis think the camera sitting on the counter is an open invitation for a photo shoot. Many times we catch them, other times we don't & I just am in for a surprise when I go to view my photos. Here are some of the favorites.

I love when they take turns...

Brett made us. And if it wasn't good enough, he made us retake it.

Yay SWA!

Trust me, this startled me, too. Took me a while to figure it out, but it's Davis in his pirate costume. (that's the beard)

Guess who took the photo on the left? Hint: Guess who took the photo on the right? (Notice the change in scenery?)

What's worse than being so mad you throw a tantrum? Your brother taking pics! (I like how he gets up to leave!)

Hey Brett!

They LOVE taking pictures of their TV shows. This is Word World. I have a few more scenes (not pictured) if you want to see more & piece it together.

Grandma in a toddler-sized KC Royals hat. Lucky Grandma to get this shot!

Lib on the prowl... and Mommy, hello Mommy! Pull yourself away from that nail-biter of an e-mail. Your kid has your camera again.

Scenes from "Anatomy of an FA-18". (one of Brett's favorite shows) This is in the cockpit.

And this was the only one that really did make me wonder where in the HECK my camera had been. I actually was a little scared & felt a little violated with this one. I'm thinking it's a scene from the FA-18 show...

I'm calling this Part I of "If my Camera could talk" because I already have a few new ones loaded on my camera & I know there will be more. Hope you enjoyed

B & his Lunchbox

Brett,

I am soooo sorry I have made you carry the same lunchbox for FOUR YEARS & to FOUR DIFFERENT SCHOOLS. I had no idea until I just stumbled upon these photos just now. These photos are dated September 14, 2004 - 4 years ago this weekend. {yikes!}

You carried this lunchbox to your 1st day of school in Jacksonville, FL! You were 2 1/2, almost 3! Then you finished the school year at another school after we moved to Corpus Christi, TX. The following school year we started you at a different (closer) preschool & you still had that lunch box. Now you are in 1st grade at yet another school & you STILL have that lunchbox.

Bretty, if you'd like I'll take you lunchbox shopping. But if you're attached to it, I can see why. It's probably like an old friend! :)

Love, Mommy

Where did cREaTe go?

I guess I never fully explained what happened... and it happened fairly quickly, like in a matter of days. So I'll back up a bit...

I got rid of my own dot com that I had had for FOUR YEARS! A little crazy... but I found out the rates were going up for the 1st time in 4 years. Sort of took that as a sign. I looked at when the next payment was due & decided to get my act together before then, take a giant leap of faith & just close up shop.

Move out was fairly easy... I just had to forward on some important e-mails & addresses. Then I called up my friends at Yahoo Small Business & said "goodbye". They hit a button & I was GONE. And locked out of my e-mail address. It really all happened very quickly.

So now I'm on Etsy full time. I know Etsy is some foreign land to almost all of you. So on my cREaTe blog I have done a few posts on the topic.

You can read here... [can you tell I'm totally trying to convert you all & bring you into my world?] Come on, make my day. Make me proud. My Aunt Jane did it! :)
Also, on my cREaTe blog if you go to the right hand side you can find the label "etsy" & just click to read all my posts that involve Etsy. You can see a couple of things that I've bought as an Etsy Buyer!

Anyway... just wanted to tell you all what happened, why & why it happened so fast! Okay, enough chit chat. Get to reading! :)

Irish Fest

I need to play catch-up on a couple events!!! Here is one of them... last weekend we attended the Irish Fest downtown at Crown Center [Hallmark Cards' Headquarters]! It was SO FUN. Definitely will have to become an annual event for the family. Kansas City, the city of fountains, has some incredible fountains down at Crown Center! Some were even dyed green for the occasion! As you can see, the fountains were a hit with everyone, including Little Miss. There were 2 stages going with various Irish bands & even a cute troop of little Irish dancers! In my opinion, anything that involves Irish music, is a guaranteed GOOD TIME. Good mood in an instant! Love it.

Go Chiefs!

Yesterday we had Kyle's family over to watch the Chiefs Game! I love getting to do this... our Chiefs Game Days used to be soooo lonely when we were in FL & TX! :) Here's an adorable photo of the cousins, and a couple of Libby & Brett getting some snuggle time with Daddy. The Chiefs lost... but we all know it's not whether you win or lose, it's all about how fun the party is! :)

Flashback Friday - The Cowgirl Outfit

There's a cowgirl outfit that has circulated my family starting with my mom when she was a little girl!

My mom is top right, my sister Becky is top left, I'm bottom left (no, that's not Davis w/ a mullet) & my sister Leah is bottom right.

Well, guess whose turn it is to wear it? Yep... the next female in line [and so far the only one] is little Libby.

Today I glanced up at the shelf above her crib & saw her hot pink cowgirl boots that I've had on display since they were given to us as a baby gift (by our dear friends' mom, Chris Lopez). So put 2 & 2 together... and guess what Libby's going to be for Halloween? She'll be a retro cowgirl with hot pink boots! :) I think I'll just add a hot pink turtle neck under the vest & she'll be good-to-go.

I already got the cowgirl boots down so she can start trying them on. Which she will. She is a total shoe freak trying on all my shoes, Kyle's, Brett's, Davis's, her own... and usually in random combos. (Davis's blue croc with my ummm...pick a shoe, any shoe...running shoe.) Then she ditches that "pair" she put together & will try on a new combo. Which leaves us with deserted random single shoes all over the house. I have a TON of pictures of her doing this from the past week... so I'll have to post about that after Flashback Friday has come & gone! :) HAVE A GOOD ONE!
